I didn’t set out with a clear plan to build a career in security. Back then, I was just looking for any work I could find. A mate mentioned a job stewarding at the Isle of Wight Festival, and honestly, I couldn’t resist the chance.
That one event turned out to be life-changing — I had the time of my life and something just clicked.
From there, I decided to chase that feeling. I got myself qualified as a Door Supervisor through Get Licensed, and that’s where everything really started to open up for me. If you’re thinking about doing the course, my advice is simple: just go for it. Pay attention in class, ask questions when you’re unsure, and trust that you can get through it. That’s what worked for me.
After I passed in March, it still took me a few months to really get into the industry. I didn’t start applying properly until September — and I went straight in at the deep end. My first job ended up being at the Queen’s Funeral. It was intense, but it was also the perfect way to prove to myself that I could do this. And I found it through the GuardPass app, which helped me connect with gigs that matched what I wanted.

Now, I’m doing events all the time — festivals, gigs, the King’s Coronation, and more. My process is simple: see a job I want, apply, do it, send my invoice, job done. I love the variety of people and places I get to experience. I get paid to be doing what feels like a dream. My takeaway? Don’t let lack of experience stop you.
Don’t let lack of experience stop you. Apply for roles even if you think you’re not “ready.” Get your licence, put yourself out there, and trust that you’ll find your path — just like I did.
