What qualifications do I need before I can apply for an SIA licence?

You need to be 18 or over to apply for an SIA licence with Get Licensed — no formal qualifications required. Beyond that, you'll need the right to work in the UK, a pass on an SIA-approved training course, and a clear criminal background check; some licences, Door Supervisor included, also require a valid Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, which can be arranged as part of your course.

Do I need any experience to become a security officer?

No prior security experience is required to train as a licensed security officer with Get Licensed — our SIA-accredited courses are built for complete beginners. What matters more than experience is showing up, paying attention, and taking the training seriously.

Do I need to be a UK citizen or have the right to work in the UK?

You don't need to be a UK citizen to get an SIA licence, but you do need the right to work in the UK. In other words, UK nationals and anyone with a settled, pre-settled, or work-permitting visa status all qualify. You'll need to show proof of this when you apply, alongside your training certificate and ID.

How long does an SIA badge take to arrive?

An SIA licence application is typically processed in 4-6 weeks, with the physical badge posted within about two weeks of approval — often faster, within a few working days. If it hasn't arrived after 14 days, a replacement can be requested through your SIA online account.

Can I do more than one course at the same time (e.g. Door Supervisor + First Aid)?

Yes — Door Supervisor and First Aid courses can usually be booked together with Get Licensed, since some licences require First Aid anyway. The main thing to check is that the dates and locations don't clash, as both are delivered in person over consecutive days.

How much does an SIA licence cost in total (course + application fee)?

A UK SIA licence costs around £454 in total for Door Supervisors: a £204 application fee paid to the SIA, plus £249.99 for training with Get Licensed. Security Guard and CCTV routes cost approximately £404 and £444 respectively, factoring in the training and licence costs. Most people earn that back within their first couple of weeks of work.

How long is an SIA licence valid for, and how do I renew it if it expires?

An SIA licence is valid for 3 years from the date it's issued, and renewing before it expires just takes a short refresher course (1-2 days) and reapplication — start that process at least 16 weeks out to avoid any gap in your ability to work.

What's the difference between a Door Supervisor licence and Security Guard licence?

A Door Supervisor licence is the broader of the two SIA licences: it covers general security work plus door access control at licensed venues like pubs and clubs, while a Security Guard (manned guarding) licence covers static sites only — offices, warehouses, retail. The industry now uses "security officer" rather than "guard" to reflect the professional training and legal accountability the role carries, but functionally both are licensed security professionals.

What happens if my SIA licence is lost or stolen?

A lost, stolen, or damaged SIA licence can be replaced through your SIA online account, typically within 14 working days. If it was stolen, report it to the police first for a crime reference number, since you'll need it for the replacement application.
