What do I need to qualify for an SIA licence course?

You need to be 18 or over to qualify for an SIA licence course — no formal qualifications required. Beyond that, you'll need the right to work in the UK (you don't need to be a UK citizen — settled, pre-settled, or work-visa status all count), a pass on an SIA-approved training course, and a clear criminal background check. Some licences, including Door Supervisor, also require a valid Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, which can be arranged as part of your course. No prior security experience is needed either; our courses are built for complete beginners.

How much does an SIA licence cost in total?

A UK SIA licence costs around £460 in total for an SIA Door Supervisor licence: a £204 application fee paid to the SIA, plus training from £259.99 with Get Licensed. The SIA Security Guard training and SIA CCTV training routes cost less overall — from about £400 and £440, respectively. Your SIA licence is sometimes called your SIA badge, and it's what you're actually issued once your application to the SIA is approved. Most people earn back their investment within the first couple of weeks of work.

How long is an SIA licence valid, and how do I renew it?

An SIA licence is valid for 3 years from the date it's issued. Renewing before it expires just takes a short refresher course (1-2 days) and reapplication — start that process at least 16 weeks out so you're never left without a valid licence. If your licence has already lapsed, check with us directly, as the renewal route may differ from a standard refresher.

What's the difference between SIA Door Supervisor training and SIA Security Guard training?

SIA Door Supervisor training leads to the broader of the two licences — it covers general security work plus door access control at licensed venues like pubs and clubs, while SIA Security Guard training leads to a licence covering static sites only, such as offices, shops, and warehouses. No, there's no height, fitness, or build requirement for an SIA licence or for security work generally. The job is built on communication, de-escalation, and situational awareness, not physical size or strength — officers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels.
