What does a security officer actually do?

You provide safety so other people can get on with their lives. That means reading a room, de-escalating trouble, controlling access, and keeping calm when others can't.

Which licence is right for me?

Door Supervisor is the most versatile SIA licence — it covers general security work plus licensed venues like pubs, clubs, and events, which is why most employers prefer it. Security Guard covers static sites such as offices, shops, and warehouses, CCTV suits control-room work, and Close Protection leads to bodyguard roles.

How much does it cost to get into security?

Around £460 in total for a Door Supervisor licence: a £204 application fee paid to the SIA, plus training from £259.99 with Get Licensed. The Security Guard and CCTV routes cost less overall — from about £400 and £440 respectively. Most people earn back their investment within the first couple of weeks of work.

How long until I can start working?

Training takes 3 to 6 days for most licences — 3 for CCTV, 4 for Security Guard, and 6 for Door Supervisor — with exam results the same day you finish. Your SIA licence application then takes around 2 to 6 weeks to process, so most people are job-ready within 3 to 6 weeks of booking.

Do I need experience to start?

No. You need to be 18 or over with the right to work in the UK (you don't need to be a UK citizen), and no formal qualifications or prior security experience are required — our courses are built for complete beginners.

What documents do I need?

You'll need one Group A ID (such as a passport or driving licence) and two Group B address proofs (such as a utility bill or bank statement). Non-UK citizens must also show the right to work, and front-line applicants need a passport-style photo.

What if I don't pass first time?

How long does it take to get an SIA Door Supervisor Licence?

The SIA Door Supervisor Licence application takes 2 to 6 weeks to process after completing the training course and passing the exam.
