Emergency First Aid at Work, or EFAW, is a one-day workplace first-aid qualification for emergency situations. HSE guidance describes EFAW as the level of training that enables a first-aider to provide emergency first aid at work. It can be suitable for people who need to act as a named first aider, depending on the employer's first-aid needs assessment.

It is commonly used to meet the first-aid requirement for SIA Door Supervisor and Security Guard licence-linked training and refresher routes, provided it meets the SIA's current content, validity and face-to-face assessment rules. Close Protection has a separate Level 3 first-aid requirement. See the SIA licence guide for the licensing process.

The course is for anyone who needs workplace first-aid training, wants an accepted first-aid certificate or is preparing to start an SIA route. It is suitable for complete beginners and does not require previous first-aid experience.

You practise practical skills such as CPR, controlling bleeding, responding to burns and managing an emergency scene. The provider currently states that the certificate is valid for three years; check the certificate and the current course terms for the applicable validity period.

EFAW takes one day. The training and assessment happen on the same day, so you normally leave with your result and certificate without waiting for a separate exam date.

The course is delivered at a training centre and includes hands-on practice. Check available EFAW dates and prices before booking because course fees and dates can change.

No. The qualification requires practical, hands-on training and face-to-face assessment. Online first-aid videos can help you learn basic information, but they do not by themselves provide the practical assessment needed for an accepted workplace first-aid qualification.

If you are taking EFAW for security training, you can often add it to the same booking as your Door Supervisor course or relevant refresher course.

The course teaches you how to assess an emergency, protect yourself and others, summon help and communicate with a casualty. Current SIA guidance also requires accepted first-aid training for security routes to cover practical elements such as CPR, life-threatening bleeding and keeping airways open. The course content also includes burns, choking, epilepsy and poisoning.

Assessment is based on participation and practical performance during the day. Your trainer supports you as you practise each skill.

There are no formal qualifications or previous first aid experience requirements. You must be 16 or older to receive the certificate, attend in person and take part in the practical training.

If you are completing EFAW before SIA training, check the age and first aid rules for the SIA course as well. The Door Supervisor course, for example, requires a valid first aid certificate before training begins.

The course is designed for beginners and is assessed through guided participation rather than a high-pressure written exam. Your trainer demonstrates the skills, gives you the opportunity to practise and observes your performance during the day.

Attend the full course, take part in each activity and ask for clarification when you need it. Results are normally provided the same day.

EFAW or an accepted equivalent can meet the first-aid requirement for Door Supervisor and Security Guard licence-linked training where it satisfies the SIA's content, validity and face-to-face assessment rules. The qualification must have at least 12 months remaining when the training starts. Close Protection has a different Level 3 first-aid requirement, so check that route separately.

Close Protection has different first aid requirements, so check the specific course before booking. For Door Supervisor training, you can add this course to the same booking as the Door Supervisor course to complete the requirement first.

The Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years. Check the certificate and current course terms, and arrange an accepted renewal course before it expires if your workplace requires continuous cover. Certain SIA courses may require a higher-level qualification of First Aid at Work training.

If you are using it for an SIA refresher, check the validity period required by the specific course and bring your certificate to the training centre.
