Get the right licence for your new security career
The SIA Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) Licence costs a non-refundable sum of £190. You will need to pay this directly to SIA - the licensing authority for the security industry.
To be eligible for the SIA CVIT (or SIA Cash and Valuables in Transit) Licence, you need to pass the CVIT Training Course, be at least 18 years old and have the right to live and work in the UK.
The CVIT Operator Course introduces you to the fundamentals of working in the security industry, including the legal framework and key procedures. It runs over 3 days and is a requirement for obtaining the SIA Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) Licence.
The SIA checks criminal backgrounds of applicants through a DBS check, as well as verifying their identity.
Having a criminal record does not mean you cannot apply for an SIA licence. The SIA makes a decision based on your conviction. It is always advisable to check with them before applying, as the application fee is non-refundable.
To be a CVIT Operative, or to carry out the licensable activities of a CVIT Operative, such as protecting cash or valuable while they are being transported, you will need to apply for a licence and complete the necessary training. You cannot currently use or integrate any other SIA Licences.
If you currently hold an SIA Licence, you will still have to pay for an additional one. However, you will be eligible for a 50% discount on the £190 application fee.
According to the SIA website, it takes 25 working days to process a licence application. In some cases, this can take up to 6 weeks due to additional security checks.
The SIA Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) Licence allows you to work for security companies that are involved in the transfer of cash from one business to another.
It is illegal to work in the private security industry without the necessary SIA Licence. In some cases, employers are granted exemptions under Section 4(4) of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
To renew your SIA CVIT Licence, you do not need to take any refresher training. You can simply start a renewal application on the SIA website.
It will cost £190 to renew your SIA licence. Your new licence will last for 3 years.
You can start renewing your SIA licence 4 months before your current licence is due to expire. Your new licence will only start after your current licence expires.
