The Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) qualification will allow you to work in this area of the private security industry. If you are looking for better pay in the industry, this three-day course can give you an invaluable step to increasing your salary by around 25%.
With the UK becoming increasingly reliant on debit and credit cards, experts say that cash will always remain around. In addition, to which cards are of value and need transporting safely. Items such as works of art, priceless gems, and jewellery also need transporting safely. This industry is, therefore, never going to die out.
A 3-Day course covering all of the required mandatory units for the learner to apply to the SIA (Security Industry Authority) for the CVIT Licence.
What are the roles of the CVIT team?
There are several CVIT companies, including G4S, Loomis, Gunnebo and BDI Securities. Banks, financial organisations, large stores, local authorities, jewellers, museums and exhibitions all need to have cash or valuables transported regularly.
Start Training Immediately And Become SIA Licensed Quickly In A Few Weeks Qualifying as a cash and transit security guard takes just three days. It will then take around five weeks to have your licence approved by the SIA.
What is the average salary for a CVIT operative?
The salary for a cash and transit guard is higher than the average salary of a door supervisor, which is £20,536. Hourly rates tend to be around £13 -£17 hourly, with annual salaries averaging £28,106.
Is it dangerous to work in the cash and transit industry?
There are risks with any job. As a doctor or nurse in a hospital, you stand a far more serious chance of being physically or sexually assaulted by a patient, with a staggering 30% of staff saying they have been abused in this way. In security, as a door supervisor, you are taking a risk when you are dealing with potential violence.
Cash and transit personnel often receive bad press. The news often has stories about heists and attacks on cash and transit drivers and guards. Obviously, when a serious amount of cash and valuables are at stake, this can be targeted by sophisticated and organised criminals. However, attacks are exceptionally rare. As a cash and transit guard or driver, while clients need to rely on the service at regular times, routines will vary, in accordance with client needs, so that you are not a sitting duck where criminals can expect you to turn up at the same entrance, at the same time, on the same day.
The course will also teach you how to deal with a rare emergency. Criminals are essentially after the cash and valuables. Adding violence to the crime only makes the stakes and the penalties harsher and will only mean more police officers are allocated to finding the perpetrators. The company you work for places far more value on your life than the cash and valuables you are holding. In the event of a heist, you will be advised not to risk yourself in any way and to release the money and valuables to armed robbers.
What will I learn in the course?
The course runs over three consecutive days, and it's divided into two units:
Unit 1 – Principles of Cash And Valuables in Transit (CVIT) In The Private Security Industry
Unit 2 – Principles of Working as a Cash And Valuables In Transit (CViT) Operative in The Private Security Industry

"Wonderful experience being trained by Ben McCarty. He knows his job very well. Give us the trainees opportunities to express ourselves, ask questions and respond to them accordingly. But he is sometimes too fast with words that some of us who are not English native speakers sometimes find it a little difficult to follow along. But heโs a great trainer."
โThe whole course was well taught and delivered in a professional manner. My instructor, James Gilles, was very knowledgeable over all subjects covered in the door supervisor and the first aid course. any questions raised were answered immediately and a full explanation given. 10/10 for the whole experience & the support from Get Licensed."
The course takes three days. On completion, you will have learned the key procedures for this role, including legal information and an overview of the security industry.
Due to this job involving cash and valuables, you will need to pass a criminal background check. It doesn't have to be a perfect record, but you are unlikely to pass the DBS check if you have had offences for dishonesty, fraud or theft. Remember that the ยฃ190 will not be refunded if you fail the check before applying.
To work as a CVIT operative, you need to have a CVIT licence. The CVIT course trains you in specific skills to cover this role. A door supervisor course equips you with different skills. You can hold both licences together, and if you currently have another SIA licence, whether it be as a security guard, door supervisor or CCTV operative, you will get a 50% discount on the ยฃ190 CVIT licence fee.
According to the SIA website, it takes 25 working days to process a licence application. In some cases, this can take up to 6 weeks due to additional security checks.
The SIA Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) Licence means that you will be able to get higher-paid security work where the transfer of cash and valuables are transferred. Often this might be large stores, banks, museums or exhibitions.
It's illegal to work in the security industry without an SIA licence. Working in this specialised area of security means that large sums of cash and valuables are at stake. Due to insurance purposes, employers will always check you you have the necessary CVIT SIA licence.
You will need to renew your licence after three years. The good news, however, is no refresher training is required.
It will cost ยฃ190 to renew your SIA licence.
Don't let your licence expire. You can start the renewal process from four months before it expires. Don't worry; you won't waste money; your new licence will begin from the date your old licence expires.
