What SIA top-up refresher training is

Your SIA licence lasts 3 years, and refresher training is how you keep it. The SIA will not renew a front line licence without it.

It does 2 things. First, it sharpens your safety-critical skills: searching, restraint, spotting a threat. Any skill dulls without regular practice, and these are the ones a front line officer has to get right first time. The refresher training puts them back to standard so they are there the moment you need them.

Second, it teaches you what has changed since you last trained. The SIA has added new material to the standard, and this is where you pick it up.

You leave with the certificate the SIA needs to see on your renewal application.

The refresher training covers:

  • Chevron Flash Conducting searches
  • Chevron Flash Protecting people in vulnerable situations, including spiking
  • Chevron Flash Terror threat awareness, including your ACT certificate
  • Chevron Flash Physical intervention, on the Door Supervisor refresher course

3

Apply to renew

Send your renewal application to the SIA with your new certificate. Time left on your old licence carries over.

SIA decision in ~2 to 4 weeks
Before you book: You need a valid First Aid certificate to sit any refresher course, and you show it to your trainer on the day. If yours has run out, you do not need a second booking. Choose your refresher course, and on the booking page you will see the option to add Emergency First Aid at Work to it and do both in one go.

Work back from the expiry date on your licence. The order matters: refresher training first, then the application. Book with enough room to sit the course, pass it, and get the application in.

Your renewal timeline:

  • Chevron Flash Any time before expiry: you can sit the refresher up to 3 years ahead. There is no such thing as too early.
  • Chevron Flash Up to 4 months before expiry: the SIA opens your renewal application. Unused time carries over.
  • Chevron Flash Once your checks are running: the SIA typically takes ~2 to 4 weeks to reach a decision.
  • Chevron Flash Anything changed on your record? Check it first with the free SIA criminal record checker.

The job changed, so the standards changed with it

The SIA rebuilt front line training around what officers deal with on shift now. Refresher training became a condition of renewal for Door Supervisors and Security Guards on 1 April 2025, and for Close Protection operatives on 1 April 2026.

SIA Top-Up Refresher training is the additional qualification required for certain SIA renewal routes. For Door Supervisor, Security Guard and Close Protection licence holders, the relevant refresher must be completed before the renewal application. It updates the required skills and provides the qualification evidence for the renewal process.

The course you need depends on the licence printed on your SIA card: Door Supervisor Top-Up, Security Guard Top-Up or Close Protection Top-Up.

Choose the refresher that matches the licence you want to renew. Get Licensed currently presents the Door Supervisor refresher as two classroom days and the Security Guard refresher as one classroom day; official durations can vary with the self-study component. Close Protection licence holders need the Close Protection refresher route. Check the current booking details before relying on a fixed duration.

The licence type is printed on the front of your SIA card. The relevant qualification depends on the licence route, and holding more than one licence may mean completing separate refresher training for each licence you want to keep.

The relevant refresher is mandatory for the applicable renewal routes. For Door Supervisor and Security Guard licences, the requirement applies from 1 April 2025; for Close Protection, it applies from 1 April 2026. Complete the correct refresher before submitting the renewal application.

Complete the course first, then apply to renew on the SIA website. The SIA licence guide explains the application order and timing.

The duration depends on the licence, provider format and self-study component. Get Licensed currently presents Security Guard Top-Up as one classroom day, Door Supervisor Top-Up as two classroom days and Close Protection Top-Up as a multi-day classroom course. Check the current booking details for the exact format.

Each course may also include e-learning before the classroom training. The practical assessments must be completed in person where the course requires them.

Starting prices vary by licence and location. As a guide, Security Guard Top-Up is the shortest and lower-cost route, typically starting from £109.99. Door Supervisor Top-Up costs more because it includes physical intervention (typically starting from £139.99), and Close Protection Top-Up is the specialist option that typically starts from £350.

The SIA renewal fee of £204 is separate and is paid directly to the SIA. Check the packages, locations, and dates for the exact course price before booking.

Only part of the process can be completed online. Some refresher courses send e-learning videos to complete before the classroom day, but the exams and practical assessments must be completed in person.

Search techniques, physical intervention and other practical skills need to be demonstrated to a trainer. If you need a mostly online route into security rather than a renewal, the CCTV Operator course offers live virtual training for part of its programme.

Yes, but the qualification depends on the route. Door Supervisor and Security Guard refresher training requires EFAW or an accepted equivalent with at least 12 months remaining at the start of training. Close Protection refresher training requires a Level 3 first-aid qualification or equivalent with at least 12 months remaining.

If your certificate has expired or is close to expiry, add the Emergency First Aid at Work course to the booking where available.

You can apply to renew up to four months before your current licence expires. Complete the required refresher training first, then submit the renewal application. Any time remaining on the existing licence is added to the new licence.

The SIA says processing times vary and are not guaranteed, but typically take up to 6 weeks. Read the SIA licence renewal guide for the application steps. If your licence has expired, the SIA says it cannot be renewed; check the new-application and training requirements before booking.

A refresher qualification is specific to the licence route it covers. Completing a Door Supervisor refresher does not automatically renew a separate Close Protection licence. If you hold more than one licence, check the current SIA renewal guidance to confirm which qualification or licence route applies to each one.

If you are thinking about adding another licence instead of renewing only your current one, compare the options in the SIA licence guide before choosing a course.
