What the Door Supervisor Top-Up
Refresher is
If your Door Supervisor licence is expiring, you can't renew it without this refresher: the SIA requires it before any renewal. It's 2 days of training that brings you in line with the new SIA standards, covering everything added since you last trained. You already know the job. This course keeps you qualified to keep doing it.
The updated course adds:
Terror threat awareness
Advanced search techniques
Vulnerability awareness, including spiking
Enhanced physical intervention skills
What's new in the SIA Top-Up Refresher course for Door Supervisors
The Top-Up Refresher replaces the previous Top-Up training with crucial updates: terror threat awareness, advanced search techniques for effective security checks, vulnerability awareness for issues like spiking, and enhanced physical intervention skills. The updates align with the latest SIA standards, so you finish with the skills modern door work asks for and a renewal that goes through smoothly.

What you need before you book
Before booking your Top-Up Refresher, make sure you have:
An expiring Door Supervisor licence: this course is for renewing an existing Door Supervisor licence, not getting a first one. New to security? Book the full Door Supervisor course.
First Aid: a valid Emergency First Aid qualification (EFAW or higher) with at least 12 months of validity left. Show it to your trainer on the day. No certificate? We run the 1-day Emergency First Aid course too: add it to your booking at checkout as the First Aid + Top-Up package.
E-learning: we send you the e-learning videos when you book. Just finish them before your course starts.
Criminal record: the SIA re-checks your record when you renew. Anything changed since your last application? Use the free SIA criminal record checker.

How to renew your Door Supervisor licence
Pass the 2-day Top-Up Refresher, then apply for renewal on the SIA's website. The SIA charges a £204 renewal fee, and the renewed licence is valid for another 3 years. Once your checks are in progress, the SIA typically takes ~2 to 4 weeks to reach a decision.

The refresher covers terror threat awareness, advanced search techniques, vulnerability and spiking awareness, and enhanced physical intervention skills. You complete short e-learning before attending the classroom course, then apply for renewal through the SIA.
You cannot legally work as a door supervisor with an expired licence. Regardless of how long you've been in the industry, once your licence expires the only way to resume working is by taking the refresher course and renewing your SIA licence. Book early enough to complete the course and submit your application before your current licence expires.
The Security Guard Top-Up Refresher is shorter at one day because it does not include the physical intervention unit included in the Door Supervisor refresher course.
- Terror threat awareness, including the risks and response procedures relevant to modern venues.
- Advanced search techniques for safer and more effective security checks.
- Vulnerability awareness, including spiking and how to respond when someone may be at risk.
- Enhanced physical intervention, taught and assessed in person.
The training is scenario-based, so you practise applying the updated knowledge rather than only reading about it.
When booking, choose a classroom date at a centre near you. If you need a new licence rather than a renewal, the Door Supervisor training course explains the full six-day route.
If you do not have a valid certificate, add the Emergency First Aid at Work course to your booking so you can complete both requirements without arranging a separate provider.
Your trainer prepares you for both parts during the two days, and results are normally available on the day. You can also practise with our free Door Supervisor refresher mock exams.
Get Licensed currently quotes around two to four weeks once checks are in progress, but the SIA says it cannot guarantee an exact processing time. Use the SIA licence renewal guide and the SIA's decision-timescale indicator when planning.
Instalment options may be available for the course fee at checkout.
