The Security Guard Top-Up Refresher is the 1-day course required before renewing an SIA Security Guard licence. It updates your knowledge to the current SIA standard without making you repeat the full four-day Security Guard course.

The course covers terror threat awareness, advanced search techniques and vulnerability awareness, including spiking. You complete short e-learning before attending the classroom day, then apply to renew through the SIA.

Yes. The SIA has required the Security Guard refresher qualification before renewal since 1 April 2025. Complete the relevant refresher before submitting the renewal application. If your licence has expired, the SIA says it cannot be renewed; check the new-application route before booking.

The refresher is for an existing Security Guard licence that is approaching expiry. The SIA says an expired licence cannot be renewed, so check the current new-application and training requirements before booking if your licence has already expired. If you are new to security, book the full Security Guard training course instead.

Get Licensed currently presents this course as one classroom day, with pre-course e-learning. Official SIA guidance allows the in-person duration to vary with the self-study component, so check the current booking details for the exact format and assessment arrangements.

The Door Supervisor Top-Up Refresher takes two days because it includes updated physical intervention training.

The updated Security Guard refresher covers:
  • Terror threat awareness and appropriate response procedures.
  • Advanced search techniques for safer access control and incident prevention.
  • Vulnerability awareness, including recognising and responding to spiking risks.
  • Updated security officer content aligned with the current SIA standard.

The course is practical and scenario-based, with the trainer helping you apply the knowledge to realistic security situations.

No. You can complete the e-learning at home, but the refresher training and assessments must be attended in person. The practical elements, including search techniques, need to be demonstrated to a trainer.

Book a classroom date at a centre near you. If you are considering a different licence, the SIA licence guide compares the available routes.

You need the existing Security Guard licence-linked qualification, the relevant refresher booking and the required first-aid qualification before training. For Security Guard refresher training, the SIA requires EFAW or an accepted equivalent with at least 12 months remaining at the start of training. Complete any pre-course e-learning and prepare the documents needed for the application.

If you do not have a valid first aid certificate, add the Emergency First Aid at Work course to your booking where available. Read the SIA licence renewal guide for the application steps after training.

The refresher includes a multiple-choice exam and practical assessment, both completed on the training day. The written part checks the updated principles of working as a security officer, while the practical part checks how you apply the new search and safety techniques.

Your trainer prepares you during the day, and results are normally available the same day. You can also practise using the Security Guard refresher mock exams.

You can apply to renew up to four months before your licence expires. Complete the Top-Up Refresher first, then submit the renewal application. Any remaining time on your current licence is carried over.

Allow around two to four weeks for the SIA to reach a decision once checks are in progress. Booking early helps reduce the risk of a gap in your licensed work. Read the SIA licence renewal guide for the full sequence.

The refresher course price varies by date, location and package, so check the live Security Guard Top-Up dates and prices before booking. The SIA renewal fee is separate and is paid directly to the SIA; the current official fee is £204 from 1 April 2026.
