Providing security will always be the top priority if you decide to dive into this career, however, in this specialisation, your strength will be how you deal with customers.

Distribution security officer duties and responsibilities:

• Engage customers who are coming to your assignment and guide them to the relevant departments as requested

• Work closely with management when it comes to theft prevention and detection

• Conduct regular patrols on-site to try to preempt any criminal activities

• Prepare reports in case any incidents arise

• Monitor the various alarm systems at your assignment

Following training for this role, you will be equipped with the skills to:

• Conduct regular area patrols

• Complete security documentation  

• Supervise and control access to your assigned location  

• Communicate clearly with staff at all levels of the organisation

Distribution security officers are also responsible for:  

• Creating a safe work environment

• Highlighting all breaches of security procedures

• Providing detailed information and reports
• Monitoring fire, intruder and CCTV systems when necessary
• Support with access to the site for both people and vehicles

Working conditions

Since you will be responsible for many different aspects of your assignment, you should try your best as possible to maintain your physical fitness. Once you find the right team to work with you will find that job while fast-paced at times can also be fun. That’s mostly because you may be rotated at several different posts during your assignment. This might help stave off any boredom during your shift. That being said, expect to be on your feet a lot as regular patrols may also be part of your regular duties. It’s best to familiarise yourself with whatever product or service the company is involved with, as incoming customers will look to you for guidance.

A distribution security officer needs to be:

Education required

There are no specific qualifications, such as GCSEs, required to take your SIA course. However, because all you need is your SIA qualification, you will be competing with a lot of people from countries around the world who have the right to work in the UK. You should have at least a strong command of English, as you will be required to listen and understand situations as well as write reports and communicate with your team.
