A door supervisor is licensed to work in venues that serve alcoholโ€”like bars, nightclubs, and festivalsโ€”where managing entry, crowd control, and incidents is crucial. A security guard, on the other hand, cannot work in licensed venues and is typically based in offices, retail stores, or warehouses. Door supervisors receive extra training in physical intervention, making their role more specialised.ย 

Most door supervisors earn between ยฃ12 and ยฃ23 per hour, depending on location, experience, and type of venue. Roles in high-risk environments or requiring extra qualifications (like close protection) can pay significantly more.

A Door Supervisor can work in licensed premises, such as nightclubs, bars, hotels, and event venues, as well as in retail stores, corporate buildings, festivals, and stadium security.

You donโ€™t need to be an athlete, but good general fitness helps. You should be able to stay alert during long shifts, stay calm under pressure, and handle physical intervention safely if required. Endurance, awareness, and composure matter more than brute strength.

Once you complete your training and pass the exams, the SIA licence application typically takes 2 to 6 weeks to process.

Yes. While the term 'bouncer' is commonly used, a door supervisor is the legal, SIA-recognised term. Bouncers often refer to unlicensed security staff, whereas Door Supervisors are fully trained and licensed professionals.

No, being muscular is not a requirement for becoming a door supervisor. Security work is about awareness, communication, and conflict resolution rather than physical strength. Training in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and situational awareness is more valuable than sheer size.

By Train
Reading station (RDG) is a major transport hub situated on the northern edge of the town centre, just a 9-minute walk from the training venue.
Station Approach, Reading RG1 1LZ

The station is easily accessible from around the country with easy connections from several services that include

  • Great Western Railway
  • CrossCountry
  • South Western Railway
  • TfL

There is no need to take a taxi from the station to the venue as it is within easy walking distance. If you want to, you will find a 24-hour black-cab taxi rank at the front of the station and on Friar Street. The cost is around £5.

 

Walking To The Venue
From the station, walk west on Blagrave St towards Station Rd. Here you turn left onto Station Rd. Continue from there onto Queen Victoria St and then right onto Broad St. Continue straight across West St and St Mary’s Butts onto Oxford Rd. The venue is on the left.

You can also walk the same distance and time around 9 mins, by Friar Street. Follow the same directions. But, after turning left at Station Rd, you then turn right onto Friar Street, keeping to the left to stay on Friar Street. You will then have to take a left turn onto Cheapside, followed by a right onto Oxford Rd, the venue is on the left.

 

By Car
Reading is easily accessible by car. It has three junctions for the M4 motorway, which links with the M25. Both the M40 and M3 are within easy reach. You can also travel from the North via the M6, with its Toll road or the M6 & M5 without Toll roads. There is accessible parking at Pentahotel Reading, which costs around £10.80 per day. Plus, plenty of good standard multi-storey car parks. However, do take note that the centre of Reading can get very congested. There is also a Park and ride facility from both the South and East of the city.

 

Walkability
The area around the venue, Oxford rd has a high walkability score of 71. The route is flat with plenty of shops, restaurants, pubs, banks & ATMs. There are several parks within walking distance, including Beresford Road Recreation Ground, Prospect Park, and McIlroy Park. West Reading Woodlands Local Nature Reserve.

 

Accommodation
If you are travelling a distance and do not want to commute, you can book at the venue,  prices include breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a fitness centre, and accessible parking. Locally there are several hotels within minutes of the venue including budget hotels like the Travelodge and Premier Inns. You can search for more hotels here.

 

Food & Drink
The venue is in the heart of the city, providing ample options for eating and drinking. From sophisticated and trendy cafes and restaurants to boutique cafes and the various food chains like KFC and Subway within minutes of the Pentahotel. You could also try,

Munchees at 2-3 Butter Market, Reading, RG1 2DP for a big all-day breakfast. A 7-minute walk from the hotel. It also has a grill and has a Nepalese buffet. 

Bill’s Restaurant at t Mary’s Church House, Chain Street, Reading, RG1 2HX. Here they serve a fabulous breakfast/brunch until 13.00hrs, along with the daily menu for lunch and supper meals.

There are several pubs within easy reach of the venue, including The Royal Albion, The Pond House and The White Eagle on Oxford Rd. You also have a nearby Tesco if you want a quick sandwich to eat on the go or sitting in the park.

 

SIA Job Opportunities In Reading
Like many other cities, Reading has a lot to offer in jobs for security personnel. Alongside government office work, there is the University and historical venues. Reading is also a major retail centre for the Thames valley and hosts many events throughout the year, presenting numerous security job opportunities at all levels of experience. Pubs and clubs also require trained personnel, and of course, there is the Madejski Stadium. All you need to do is obtain your SIA licence!
